Anyone looking to have graffiti removed needs a process that matches the respective substrate. This is because spray paint on a concrete wall presents different requirements than graffiti on clinker, glass, metal, or sensitive natural stone.
Therefore, we assess the affected area before starting work and coordinate the cleaning technique and intensity accordingly. Especially with listed facades, sandstone, or statues, a particularly material-friendly approach is crucial.
For roller shutters or glass surfaces of shops, we also select the method to suit the respective surface.
What methods are available for graffiti removal?
Various methods are available for the removal of graffiti. Which method is used depends primarily on the substrate, the paint used, and the condition of the surface.
High-pressure hot water cleaning
This process involves working with hot water at temperatures of approximately 80 to 100°C. Depending on the level of soiling, the cleaning can be supported by biodegradable cleaning agents. Facades made of clinker or concrete, in particular, can be treated this way.
Low-pressure blasting
In the low-pressure process, fine blasting media such as calcium carbonate, glass powder, or minerals are applied to the surface at low pressure. This allows the paint to be loosened mechanically. The process is particularly suitable for sensitive natural stone and listed facades.
Wet blasting
Here, water and a suitable blasting medium are combined. This creates less dust than dry blasting and allows the substrate to be treated more gently.
Dry ice blasting
CO₂ pellets are used in dry ice blasting. The process works without additional blasting media and accordingly leaves behind very little residue. It is particularly suitable for metal, technical surfaces, and other sensitive materials.
Sandblasting
Sandblasting can remove graffiti very effectively, but it is too aggressive for many surfaces. Therefore, this process is only used to a limited extent today and primarily for sufficiently robust surfaces such as concrete.
Laser cleaning
In laser cleaning, the paint layer is removed very precisely. The process is particularly suitable for sensitive historical surfaces, monuments, or delicate areas, but it is associated with higher costs compared to other methods.
Protection against new graffiti
After cleaning, an anti-graffiti coating can be applied. Depending on the surface and the desired protective effect, permanent, semi-permanent, or so-called sacrificial coatings based on wax or polymers can be used.
The advantage: spray and lacquer paints cannot penetrate the surface as deeply and can often be removed more easily if soiled again. We decide which sealant makes sense based on the respective substrate and the requirements of the building.
